It was another beautiful day in Palmerston North, so today we decided to head out to the Back Track trail over by Sledge Track where we have been several times before. We like this area because it is quite close to town and also the trails are very easy and enjoyable to tramp.
There were several other vehicles in the parking lot so it seemed that others were also out enjoying the day. The parking lot is close by a pasture where there were several lovely horses grazing so I had to take a picture!
Travis made fun of me for taking a picture of the sheep, but I figure, "hey, it's New Zealand, people expect to see pictures of sheep!" haha...
The trail was lovely most of the way, although there was quite a bit of brush and leaves that had accumulated on the trail. There were a few small water crossings, but nothing major. This is a very easy track, but the whole first part is a gradual incline. It's about 12K round trip so not too strenuous.
As we neared the top the trees that had fallen were larger and more obtrusive. You could see there had been some serious damage from the latest storms.
Towards the top there were some really large trees that had fallen!
Eventually the path was not safely passable.
That's okay. Scotts road (and where we turn around) was only about 100m further. We could see the sign through the trees. We stopped off and had our lunch around here as there were plenty of big logs to sit on! haha.
Just a lovely day for tramping.
