Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa Tongarewa

Our big weekend tramp got canceled due to the incredible amount of rain/wind up in the mountains...So, what better to do on a very rainy day then head to a museum!?

Travis has been wanting to visit the Te Papa Museum for the longest time, and we had originally planned to do so with mom on our way back through Wellington after our big road trip. However, we were all so exhausted that we decided to postpone this trip for another time.

Today was the perfect opportunity, so we drove up to Wellington today to spend some time roaming around the fantastic museum.

I did not take my camera, so all photos are borrowed off the public sights - just sharing so everyone knows what it looks like.

If anyone knows me at all they will know that I am not a big fan of museums...However, I make an exception with this one - it was fabulous! There were 6 flours of exhibits and it was really amazing. It took us over 3.5 hours to go through it and there is no way that we saw it all.
One of my favorite exhibits was the Mountains to Sea which showed all the birds, sea creatures, trees etc. that are found in NZ. It tells about their history and living conditions etc. and the display was just really neat. Also in this area was the big exhibit of the Colossal Squid. (Pretty amazing, although quite gnarly, to be honest!)
Loved seeing the different kiwi birds.

One of my other favorite areas was the Maori history area where they had displays of huts, boats, and many of their weapons and cultural dress etc. As part of this exhibit there was a whole section on pounamu (greenstone) and it was really amazing seeing all of the art and tools from history. Also my very favorite part was this Marae that was just breath-taking. The intricate detail and shaded color is just awe inspiring...

It was a wonderful day trip - especially for something fun to do in the rain. I highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting New Zealand. It is definitely worth the time and there were tons of areas specifically designed for the children...just awesome! You can also check out their blog if you want to follow what they are up to.
